World Alzheimer’s Day, 2023

Old People’s Home, Sharjah

World Alzheimer’s Day is observed annually on September 21st to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and its impact on individuals and families worldwide. To contribute to this global initiative and align with GMU’s Strategic Plan 2023-2027, which emphasizes social accountability and community activities serving less privileged people, a community engagement activity was organized at the Old People’s Home in Sharjah.

In 2023, the Theme is “Not Too Early & Not Too Late”, This theme underscores the critical need for timely action. It reminds that Alzheimer’s disease is a complex challenge that requires both prevention and intervention strategies. It urges us to act promptly in promoting awareness, early detection, and preventive measures while also emphasizing the importance of providing support, care, and dignity to those already living with Alzheimer’s.

The program was conducted by the dedicated 2021 batch of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students on Friday 22nd September, 2023. By embracing the urgency of raising awareness and taking preventative steps, as well as the significance of offering support and care to those affected by Alzheimer’s, our BSN students showcased admirable commitment and compassion.

Students engaged with residents in interactive sessions, including different games as Puzzles and Dominos, and some of them were engaged in a storytelling session. These activities aimed to stimulate memory, improve mood, and fostered social interaction. It is recommended to explore opportunities for long-term partnerships with elderly care facilities to provide on-going support and resources to residents and caregivers.

Al Madina Medical Centre, Ajman

The 2021 batch, BSN students delivered informative presentations using Posters that covered Alzheimer’s disease, its risk factors, and the role of a healthy lifestyle in maintaining cognitive function. The presentations were tailored to engage audiences of different age groups, from adults to geriatric population.

Following the presentations, interactive discussions were held, allowing participants to ask questions and share their thoughts on Alzheimer’s and brain health. This facilitated a meaningful exchange of knowledge and experiences. Informational pamphlets were distributed to participants, offering practical tips for brain health maintenance and resources for further education.

Dulsco Company, Dubai

On Wednesday, September 27, 2023, the Alzheimer’s Awareness Program was conducted at Dulsco Company, Dubai, targeting a diverse group of approximately 20 workers who primarily communicate in Hindi and Urdu languages. The Program was conducted by the 2021 batch students who are communicating in Hindi and Urdu languages as the participants have limited English proficiency. By delivering the program in Hindi and Urdu languages, it ensured that critical information reached those who might otherwise struggle to understand it. The theme “Not Too Early & Not Too Late” was central to the event, emphasizing the importance of timely awareness and intervention in addressing Alzheimer’s.

BSN students conducted bilingual presentations to disseminate vital information regarding Alzheimer’s disease, including its symptoms and the profound impact it has on individuals and their families. They also discussed strategies for promoting a healthy lifestyle that can potentially delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

Participants engaged in interactive sessions designed to facilitate discussion and understanding. These sessions covered practical strategies for maintaining a healthy brain, such as cognitive exercises, dietary guidance, and stress management techniques. The participants were allowed to share their thoughts and concerns about Alzheimer’s. These sessions encouraged dialogue and knowledge exchange among participants.

At the end of the program, Attendees received bilingual pamphlets and brochures, ensuring that they had access to vital resources and tips for brain health maintenance.
