The 15th International Conference of Contemporary Oncology is based in Poland and took place online from April 17-20. This conference is a yearly event that highlights the current state of cancer research from bench to bedside. This year, Dr. Raefa Abou Khouzam presented her research work during the session on the Tumor Microenvironment. In her talk entitled “Hypoxia, a Targetable Culprit to Counter Pancreatic Cancer Resistance to Therapy”, Dr. Raefa touched on the toxic relationship between hypoxia in the tumor microenvironment and pancreatic cancer progression, and how current approaches aimed at targeting this salient condition have failed to translate to clinical application. She further presented her findings on the application of a novel hypoxia-alleviating agent in pancreatic cancer to counter hypoxia and its downstream impact on tumor malignancy using the zebrafish model. The presentation was well-received and the discussion that followed was insightful.
