University of Iowa PharmD Students Presents Engaging Journal Club During Their International Rotation at Thumbay University Hospital

The Gulf Medical University (GMU) College of Pharmacy recently hosted two final-year PharmD students from the University of Iowa for an engaging 4-week international rotation at Thumbay University Hospital. During their time in the UAE, the students rotated through the cardiology, critical care, and infectious diseases departments, gaining valuable international exposure and clinical experience.

As part of their critical care rotation, the students delivered an impressive Journal Club presentation to GMU Clinical Pharmacy Preceptors and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) interns. They discussed the pivotal “Hydrocortisone plus Fludrocortisone for Adults with Septic Shock: APROCCHSS Trial,” shedding light on its methodology, outcomes, and relevance to current clinical practice. The presentation sparked meaningful discussions among the audience and presenters about how the trial findings could be applied in real-world scenarios.

This collaboration between GMU and the University of Iowa underscores the College of Pharmacy’s commitment to fostering international partnerships and advancing the educational experiences of pharmacy students. The program not only enriched the students’ clinical competencies but also facilitated valuable cross-cultural exchange, preparing future pharmacists for global healthcare challenges.
