TUFH 2023 Conference: “Designing Effective Patient-Centered Interprofessional Education Activities: Principles and Best Practices” Workshop by Dr. Eman El-Labbad & Dr. Mary Walton of GMU

“On 26th October 2023, Gulf Medical University’s contributed to Towards Unity for Health (TUFH) 2023 Conference by delivering workshop, under the title ‘Designing Effective Patient-Centered Interprofessional Education Activities: Principles and Best Practices,’ the workshop was facilitated by  Dr. Eman El-Labbad, Director of the Centre of Interprofessional Education, Research and Practice at Gulf Medical University and Dr. Mary Walton Assistant Professor at College of Nursing at Gulf Medical University. Participants at the workshop, composed international, interprofessional healthcare professionals practitioner, educators and students.

The workshop offered participants an overview of patient-centered Interprofessional Education (IPE). During the session, Dr. Eman presented various IPE competency frameworks, learning theories, and teaching and learing methods  that could be implemented in designing patient-centered IPE curriculum.  Dr. Mary Walton shared with Attendee GMU Interprofessional best practices. This will be followed by a group activity exploring the steps of designing, implementing, and evaluating patient-centered IPE activity.

Dr. Eman commented “It is a great opportunity to engage with International experts in healthcare, educators and students united on one goal to provide better health for our patients and community.  The group recommended  the following actions for TUHF 2024

  • Bridging practical experience with academia to underscore the value of IPE, emphasizing the sharing and design of work-based experiences.
  • Creating a standardized national interprofessional training protocol for practitioners and academia, ensuring consistency and quality in IPE.
  • Establishing a network of interprofessional education committees through liaison with National Communication, fostering collaboration and information dissemination in the field of IPE.

These recommendations align with the goal of enhancing IPE and strengthening the healthcare education landscape, promising improved patient care and healthcare outcomes in on national and international level.”
