Hands-on Experience in Parenteral Nutrition for GMU PharmD students

“Tell Me and I Will Forget Teach Me and I may remember, involve Me and I Will Learn.”
This famous quote is the core driver and philosophy of GMU College of Pharmacy in engaging its students in real life experiences to learn hands-on from reputable partners.

On December 7, 2021 PharmD students, as part of their “Clinical Problems in Parenteral Nutrition Course”, went on a field trip to Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, a world-class institution that has a leading Sterile Compounding Center. During this visit, the students visited this center and watched the fully automated preparation of PN solutions. Through live demonstration of real preparation practices, they learned also about the commonly encountered problems during the automated preparation of PN and other IV therapies and how to avoid and manage them. This was followed by a live discussion with a pharmacotherapy specialist on PN principles, application concepts in pharmacy practice.

The final station of this visit will be done virtually where the students will learn live from a pharmacotherapy specialist who will show them how to build and prescribe PN orders for the first time for a patient.
