GMU PharmD-MBBS Interprofessional Education in Acute Care – Cellulitis

On 21st February 2021, a group of 5th year GMU PharmD students have participated in an interprofessional education (IPE) case presentation with 4th year GMU MBBS students at Thumbay University Hospital. The IPE activity is a core component of Adult Acute Pharmaceutical Care Rotation in the Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE). Throughout the rotation pharmacy students along with medical students were following cases together, meeting patients for medication history and physical examination, and discussing with the attending emergency physicians/clinical pharmacist. During the end-of-rotation case presentation both pharmacy and medical students reflected on how they learned from each other and the implications of collaborative practice.

Saba Aziza (5th Year PharmD Student) commented: “As a pharmacist we tend to focus more on the medical therapy aspect of a patient. Having this IPE activity gave me the chance to a medical trainee. Connecting the pathogenesis and figuring out the underlying cause of the diagnosis has a major impact in deciding which medical therapy we should give. It was a great interactive activity and quite the learning experience.”

Selva Prakash (4th year MBBS student) commented: “ Inter professional Education definitely helped me collaborate with students from College of Pharmacy and come together as a team of medical professionals and discuss different cases and topics and share our knowledge. It is very helpful and I’d love to be part of and collaborate with them again”
