On March 30, 2021, GMU Colleges of Pharmacy and Nursing conducted a faculty development workshop on Virtual Patient Learning and Assessment. Virtual Patient Learning is a high fidelity simulated created by Prof. Hossam Hamdy, Chancellor of GMU. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the VPL is being used for the assessment of student learning regarding clinical competencies. Experts from the GMU Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy presented their experiences of using VPL in the assessment of student learning. Faculty and Preceptors of Colleges of Pharmacy and Nursing attended the workshop and assessed clinical competencies on direct patient care and pharmacotherapy knowledge based on observing a demonstration of clinical pharmacy services in a myocardial infarction case. The rubrics for assessment of clinical pharmacy competencies was an excerpt of the Master in Clinical Pharmacy rotation evaluation rubrics.

Vice Chancellor for Quality and Global Engagement and Dean College of Pharmacy Prof. Sherief Khalifa commented: “GMU’s VPL simulator is a multi-award-winning innovation in health professions education. It is important that we use it across all colleges and take advantage of it as a tool to promote Inteprofessional Education”.
