On October 24th, 2021, the college of pharmacy students concluded their breast cancer awareness community engagement by launching their breast cancer information desk at Thumbay University Hospital. The information desk served to promote awareness about the disease to the hospital visitors sharing with them educational leaflets and short videos prepared by the students. The material focused on risk factors, early signs, as well as techniques for self-assessment with emphasis on the importance of regular checkups and mammography for early detection.

The students prepared a poster that included statistical analysis of a survey conducted for 40 females about their general knowledge of breast cancer signs, symptoms, detection techniques, risk factors and myths. They also used their education material with the survey subjects and documented their feedback about the usefulness of the educational material.

Parallel to these outreach activities, the students also engaged in a virtual walk in honor of breast cancer awareness. The walk was powered by “Fitze” app which is UAE’s first-ever fitness rewards app. The walk was designed to the challenge the participants to walk 50K steps in 5 days. A total of 62 GMUian joined the challenge and contributed to the great cause.
Prof. Sherief Khalifa, Dean of the college of Pharmacy commented: “It is great to see GMU pharmacy students demonstrating their sense of responsibility to society and care for the health of the community. What a great way to prepare them for their role in patient care after graduation”.
