GMU College of Pharmacy Hosts a Webinar on Pharmacist Prescribing Authorities

On December 20, GMU College of Pharmacy invited Dr. Monica Metry who is a certified and authorized prescriber pharmacist, a practicing community pharmacist, and a diabetes educator in Alberta, Canada. The webinar, dedicated mainly to GMU APPE interns who are undergoing training for UK-Based Prescribing Skills Assessment, was also attended by a global audience of pharmacists and recent graduates. During her presentation, Dr. Metry highlighted the expanded role of pharmacists in Canada in independent prescribing, renewing or extending prescriptions, deprescribing, vaccine administration, and much more. All of this takes place in a collaborative agreement approach with other healthcare providers. Dr. Monica also discussed how pharmacists in most of the cities in Canada have their clinics for smoking cessation consultation, medication review, travel consults, ordering laboratory tests, and point-of-care testing. This webinar was an eye-opening opportunity for the audience on how far the well-trained and highly-competent pharmacists can integrate into the healthcare system, saving healthcare costs, improving patient safety and overall therapeutic outcomes.
