Clinical Reasoning & Decision Making and Making Sense of High Stake exams data: Faculty development Workshops by Prof. Jerome Rotgans

On Monday 21st November 2022, faculty members of College of Pharmacy attended a face-to-face Faculty Development Session titled: “How Doctors Think? A Neuroscientific Investigation of Clinical Reasoning & Decision making”. The session was delivered by Prof. Jerome Rotgans, Adjunct Associate Professor, Erasmus University (The Netherlands); Head of Psychometric Services Singapore (Psy-S); and Adjunct Professor, GMU (UAE).

During the session, Dr. Jerome presented the dual-process theory of psychological mechanisms running in the backend during clinical reasoning. Dr. Jerome revealed that all decision-makers have two totally independent and competing brain regions, one guides fast automatic reasoning, while the other is slower and more analytical.

During the workshop, Dr. Jerome engaged with the attendees in a thorough discussion about the practices used in Item response theory (IRT) as a measurement tool for the effectiveness of assessments and its potential practicality in various medical education settings for the estimation of clinical performance.
