During this 5-day visit, Dr. Shabaz has spent majority of time with the specialist pharmacists and had the opportunity to understand the healthcare system at the USA and experience collaborative practice models where pharmacists work with other healthcare professionals. He was able to experience the pharmacy services in the specialized clinical areas (Adult Outpatient Palliative Care Clinic, Emergency department, Infectious Diseases, Antimicrobial Stewardship and Psychiatry clinic).

There were meetings with the faculty to discuss how they are conducting practice-changing research and introducing new clinical services. He also met the experiential education team to learn about best practices in precepting.

Dr. Shabaz commented that “I have learnt many important things which I am very hopeful of implementing in the future to improve patient care, teaching, precepting, experiential education and health services research. The team at the Iowa College of Pharmacy, UIHC and VA medical center was so cooperative and helping, and I want to convey my thanks and regards to each of the team members at Iowa.”

A special thanks to Prof. Donald E. Letendre, Dean Iowa College of Pharmacy for making this shadowing visit possible at the UoI.
