College of Pharmacy Hosts Career Counselling Session on Entrepreneurship in Pharmacy, Featuring Dr. Mariam Altheraawi

On February 22nd, 2024 College of Pharmacy hosted a career advising session for APPE students, and alumni titled “How to Start and Run a Business in Pharmacy,” featuring, Dr. Mariam Altheraawi, Founder of Vita Nova Pharmacy.

Dr. Mariam’s expertise lies in hospital pharmacy with a passion for patient-centred care. She received her pre-registration training at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi and worked at the American Hospital Dubai and Fakeeh University Hospital. Dr. Mariam Founded a Public Speaking club, Takallam, and delivered many enlightening talks at multiple conferences, including the IVPN Symposium, MENA Pharmacy Congress, and eventually started and hosted the IVPN Voice Podcast.

During the session, Dr. Altheraawi shared her journey, shedding light on the intricacies of entrepreneurship in the pharmacy field and emphasizing the significance of meticulous planning right from the beginning.

During the session, Dr. Altheraawi highlighted the pivotal role of inventory management, particularly stressing the need for attention to detail in the initial two years of a business venture. She explained the importance of selecting and supporting staff members, recognizing their crucial contribution to the overall success of any entrepreneurial endeavor.

In addressing the inevitable challenges within the pharmaceutical business landscape, Dr. Altheraawi openly discussed issues such as medication shortages and market competition, reframing them not merely as obstacles but as opportunities for growth. She underscored the value of experiential learning, emphasizing that while resources are essential, first-hand experience serves as the ultimate teacher.

Moreover, Dr. Altheraawi delved into the complexities of staff training, acknowledging it as one of the most challenging aspects of running a pharmacy business. From managing expired medications to ensuring regulatory compliance, she provided valuable insights into navigating these intricate facets of pharmacy management.
