Report on World Obesity Day Community Engagement Program

Community Engagement Program on ‘The World Obesity Day’ with the theme for the year ‘Let’s Talk About Obesity, Our World, and Health of the Youth’ was held On March 7, 2024, at Dulsco – People and Environmental Solutions Company, Dubai.

The event was organized by the 2023 & 2022 batch of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students under the guidance of Dr. Veena M Joseph, and Dr. Masani Abdelbagi Ahmed Elmahdy.

The program aimed to shed light on the prevalence and impact of obesity on individuals’ health and well-being, with a specific focus on youth. Through a series of interactive activities and educational sessions, participants were encouraged to engage in conversations about obesity and its implications for global health.

Activities Conducted at Dulsco People and Environmental Solution Company:

  1. Awareness Talk: “Understanding Obesity and Health”: The students delivered informative talks on the cause, consequence, and prevention strategies related to obesity. Participants gained insights into the complex nature of obesity and its effects on overall health and quality of life.
  2. Fitness Test: Engaging fitness tests and physical activities were conducted to promote the importance of regular exercise and physical fitness in combating obesity. Members were encouraged to participate in fun and interactive exercises tailored to different fitness levels.
  1. Obesity Screening: BMI Assessment: Participants underwent BMI (Body Mass Index) assessments by checking their weight and determine individuals at risk of obesity-related health complications. The screenings provided valuable data for personalized health interventions and risk stratification.
  2. Screening for Obesity Complications: (Hypertension (HTN), Diabetes Mellitus (DM)): Screening was conducted on at risk workers who had high BMI to assess for common obesity-related complications, including hypertension (high blood pressure) and diabetes mellitus (elevated blood sugar levels).

Participant Engagement and Assessment Findings:

The program elicited active participation and engagement from the staff of Dulsco Company, who demonstrated a keen interest in learning about obesity prevention and health promotion strategies. Participants actively took part in discussions, screenings, and physical activities, reflecting their commitment to improving their health outcomes and overall well-being.

A total of 128 labourers participated in the program and underwent screening for BMI and blood pressure. Among them, sixty-five were of normal weight, seven were underweight, forty-eight were overweight, and eight were obese. Only six out of the 128 labourers were found to be hypertensive.

Random blood sugar levels were assessed only for the obese labourers, revealing that only one labourer had elevated blood sugar. Sixty-six labourers took up the physical fitness challenge test, of which only two were unable to complete it.

The organizers extended their appreciation to Dulsco Company for their support and participation in the program and for their warm hospitality. They look forward to continued collaboration promoting health and wellness within the workplace.

Activity 2:  Poster Competition

The Poster Competition served as a dynamic platform where students showcased their academic abilities and imaginative flair. which was held on March 19th, 2024, at the University. Three students participated in the poster competition.

Dr. Jayakumary Muttappallymyalil Faculty of Medicine and Dr. Meruna Bose, College of Health sciences, were the judges who meticulously evaluated the posters based on criteria.

1st Place was given to: Mhikevin Jade Singian Jimenez whose poster distinguished itself with the creativity, presentation clarity, and an innovative approach.

2nd Place was given to Athena Nicole Haro Tivi whose poster captivated the interest with its insightful analysis, compelling visuals, and thematic relevance.

3rd Place was given to Aida Muhammad Haneef whose poster impressed the judges with effective communication of ideas.
