Bachelor of Science in Nursing for Registered Nurses (RN-BSN)

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing for Registered Nurses (RN-BSN) Program is designed with an aim to keep pace with the changing demands of the global healthcare services and to align with international standards of nursing education, thereby provide the Registered Nurses with diploma, an opportunity to acquire a broad liberal university education with particular emphasis on competencies. It will enhance their professional development and prepare them for a broader scope of practice. It will provide avenue to the graduates to undergo higher education in nursing.

  • The Ministry is emphasizing on a Bachelor degree as a minimal qualification for nurses to practice in UAE.
  • The proposed bridge program in Nursing is a 60 credit program for registered nurses who have passed Diploma in Nursing and also have a minimum of two years of clinical experience.
  • The curriculum will bridge the gap between already acquired knowledge and skills in core nursing courses with the latest trends and advances in healthcare practice to improve the competencies essential for practising as a professional nurse.

  • The applicant must have successfully completed high school (Grade 12) and 3 or 31/2 years program of Diploma in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing.
  • The applicant must submit an Equivalency Certificate of their Diploma in Nursing from Ministry of Education, UAE.
  • The applicant must possess Registered Nurse (RN) license from the country of origin, an active Nursing Practice License from MOH/DHA/HAAD and a valid BLS
  • The applicant must have proficiency in spoken and written English. The applicant must have passed any one of the following English Language Proficiency Tests with a minimum score as applicable Emirates Standardized Language Test (EmSAT) 1100, TOEFL ITP 500, (173 CBT, 61 iBT), IELTS Academic 5.0 as approved by the Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA), Ministry of Education – Higher Education Affairs, UAE. English proficiency minimum requirement is mandatory before admission.
  • The applicant must possess a minimum of 2 years of clinical experience.
  • The applicant shall submit a copy of passport, Emirates ID, all academic documents and official transcripts/credits/grades/ marks duly attested by the Ministry of Education, UAE and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UAE or UAE Embassy in their country on admission into the program.
  • The UAE Nationals shall submit a copy of UAE nationality ID (Khulasat Al-Kayd) and a family card with an identification number.
  • The applicant shall submit a NOC from the working institution if employed.
  • Two recommendation letters.
  • The applicant shall appear for a Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs) and personal interview before the GMU Admissions Committee.

Semester – 1

Advanced English Writing [AEW 101]

The course provides an intensive instruction in the writing process focusing on the organization of ideas in well-developed expository and argumentative essays with some emphasis on developing vocabulary and writing the examination answer. In the process the students will be able to document their clinical encounters and their learning effectively.

Communication Skills for Health Professionals [CHP 101]

The course introduces the student to the principles of communication that enhance interpersonal communication between self and other individuals in small and large group settings. Scenarios from hospital settings will help the learners to visualize themselves in their future roles; lay emphasis to the increasing importance of communication between patient/client and care providers; and the connection between communication practices and quality patient care outcomes.

Health Assessment [NS-HAT 201]

This course provides the students with the knowledge and skill necessary to perform a comprehensive health assessment utilizing the skills of history taking, inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation. Normal assessment findings, frequently seen variations from normal and cultural differences are discussed.

Professional Trends and Issues in Nursing [NS-PTI 201]

This course aims at developing an understanding of the trends, current issues, scope and expanded roles in nursing to the learners. The course imparts in depth knowledge in the current concepts and factors influencing contemporary nursing and equip them to take up the roles & responsibilities of a professional nurse as well as a member of the health care team.

Concepts in Nursing [NS-CIG 201]

This course provides knowledge on the nursing concepts that form the foundations of nursing practice and provides information on nursing theories, models & approaches of nursing care. The course imparts knowledge and skills in the advanced concepts involved in the practice and developments in the nursing profession.

Nursing Informatics [NS-NIS 201]

This course prepares the student to utilize informatics and health care technologies in the nursing care of individuals for the enhancement of patient outcomes as well as to gain an appreciation of the proficiencies required of an expert knowledge worker and apply these competencies to routine practice as a nurse.

Islamic Culture [ICU 101]

The course aims to introduce the learner to the concepts and beliefs in Islam that form the basics of Islamic culture. The students are expected to identify the differences, values and preferences in Islamic culture with the existing ones. The course consists of a general review of Islam as a religion and as an approach to life.

 

Semester – 2

UAE Society [USY 101]

This course focuses on the unique nature of the UAE society and its political, geographical, cultural, demographical, and social aspects. It highlights the Emirati perspective of contemporary global changes. This course allows the students to explore the Emirati society in global context.

Nursing Research [NS-NRH 202]

This course is designed to enable students to acquire understanding of basic concepts of research, research process, research methodology, evidence-based nursing practice and statistics. The course will enable students to identify research problems / questions; develop skill in literature review; acquire knowledge on research designs and data collection methods ; understand the ethical components to be considered in research ; equip skill in developing a research proposal and understand the importance and the process of communicating research findings.

Med-Surgical Nursing [NS-MSG 202]

Medical-Surgical Nursing course aims to acquire knowledge and skills in providing advanced nursing care in different settings and facilities to the patients with medical-surgical conditions based on the previous knowledge of holistic nursing care using the nursing process concept. In this course, the students are introduced to the current trends and advances in health assessment, diagnostic procedures, medical and surgical treatments with the specific nursing care of the given conditions based on evidence-based nursing. The course gives the student practical experience with hi-fidelity simulation mannequins in the labs and followed by hands-on experience in the clinical settings.

Critical Care Nursing [NS-CCN 202]

This course is intended to support students in developing skill and knowledge in diagnosis and management of clients with critical illness. It will aid students to evolve advanced skills in assessment of critical illness, ethical and psychological issues and management of metabolic and systemic emergencies.

Geriatric Nursing [NS-GNG 202]

This course builds on the knowledge and comprehension of the distinctive needs of the aging population and aims at enhancing the skills in health promotion, illness prevention, identifying responses of elderly clients to pathological conditions, and sustaining a level of function that promotes quality of life.

Mental Health Nursing [NS-MHG 202]

This course focuses on principles and concepts related to mental health nursing. It prepares the student to recognize and appreciate the theories of abnormal human behaviors. The course also emphasizes the roles and functions of nurses in meeting the needs of patients, families, groups, and communities who are experiencing problems in psychosocial functioning. It includes management strategies from the domains of nursing, medicine and pharmacological therapeutics.  Students will also have clinical experiences related to therapeutic communication and nurse-patient relationship as well as implementation of nursing care plans for patients with mental health problems. This course also integrates Evidence-Based Practices, research, cultural diversity, ethics and legal issues which are related to mental health problems.

Biostatistics [BIS 201]

This course presents biostatistics related to health and medical problem solving in analytical way. This course introduces the student to the principles of statistics and concept of clinical trial design and analysis. Student will be able to explain the concept of variables, data description; probability and concepts of descriptive and inferential statistics; and to demonstrate basic knowledge of application data analyses in applied health sciences. Student will be able to make decision about appropriate use of descriptive and inferential statistics according to the type of data and study design for answering a research question.

 

Semester – 3

Community Health Nursing [NS-CHN 401]

This course imparts knowledge and skills to practice community health nursing with individuals, family and groups. The course enables the students to understand the national health care delivery system and to participate in the delivery of community health nursing services at different settings.

Child Health Nursing [NS-CHG 401]

This course is aimed at developing and understanding the modern concepts and current approaches to childcare, growth and development, identification, prevention and nursing management of common disorders in children. This course also deals with advanced modalities of care and management of children during pediatric emergencies and in the intensive care units. The course encourages students to utilize knowledge, problem solving techniques, critical thinking, and family centered approach in the provision of empowered care.

Obstetric Nursing [NS-ONG 401]

This course helps the students to gain knowledge and skills to practice obstetrical nursing with low risk and high-risk obstetrical conditions. The course enables the students to understand low risk and high-risk assessment and management of women during the course of pregnancy in different health care settings.

Nursing Leadership and Management [NS-NLM 401]

This course is designed to provide the students a basic knowledge about the principles and functions of management and its application to the nursing service and education. This is also designed to enable students to acquire understanding of the professional responsibilities, prospects and contribution to the growth of the profession.

Nursing Education [NS-NEN 401]

This course is designed to equip the learners with the basic knowledge of educational concepts, teaching-learning process, methods of teaching, preparation and effective use of audio-visual aids for classroom teaching as well as health promotional activities for individuals, families and community. It also provides learners the basic knowledge on evaluation process and tools that aid in assessment. The course prepares students for the educator/instructor role in academic settings as well as role of health educator in community settings.

Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Sustainability [EIS 101]

This course aims to initiate final year students in innovation process, enable them with basic entrepreneurship skills and make them understand the concepts of sustainability in the modern world of their future profession. The Course is designed in 3 parts in order to explain main principles of entrepreneurial process; to link them with concepts of innovation and to engage in sustainability leadership to affect positive societal change. For future medical professionals, this course has to ensure ability of appropriate medical decision making balanced between professional & ethical approaches on one side as oppose to finance and business on the other side.

 

Semester – 4

Extended Clinical Practicum [NS-ECP 402]

Extended clinical practicum provides opportunities for the students to work in their place of employment to gain experience and build up skills in specific areas. It allows students to apply knowledge and skills acquired in various nursing specialties during the previous semesters.

Research Project [NS-RPT 402]

This course is designed to enable the students to successfully complete a group research project. This is achieved by enabling them to equip skill in planning and implementing the steps of the research process from identifying and presenting a research problem; demonstrate skill in carrying out literature review; develop knowledge and skill in applying the appropriate research methodology; demonstrate accountability by addressing the ethical concerns and preparing an informed consent; demonstrate skill in preparing and presenting a research proposal; develop research instruments; Plan and implement the data collection; analyze the data and interpret the study findings; develop skill In writing and presenting the research project and process communicating the research findings.

The student will be awarded the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing upon:

  • Be continuously enrolled in the program from admission to graduation.
  • Have satisfied all conditions of his or her admission.
  • Successful completion of 65 credit hours.
  • A minimum pass mark of 60% (Grade D) for each course
  • A minimum CGPA of 2.0
  • Submission of a research project
  • A minimum attendance of 80%. The student shall complete the program within a maximum period of 3 years.

Nursing is projected to be among the top 10 occupations across the globe. Nursing as a career has a high job security with a demand for nurses outnumbering their supply. 

Upon successful completion of the RN-BSN program and after fulfilling the local license/regulatory requirements the graduates can:

  • Work as a registered nurse or nursing supervisor in different healthcare settings that range from clinics, hospitals, community, industrial establishments, educational institutions, travel, defence etc.
  • Advance in career as Nurse Educator, Nurse Administrator/Manager, Clinical Nurse Specialist or Nurse practitioner by pursuing higher education as Master of Science in Nursing in specialty areas like Medical Surgical Nursing, Critical Care Nursing, Child Health/Pediatric Nursing, Community Health Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Geriatric Nursing, Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing, Infection Control Nursing etc.
  • Work as Consultants, Directors, Deans, Entrepreneurs, and Researchers after completing Ph.D. in any of the specialities

On Completion of the program graduate will be able to:
