“When one teaches, two learn” said Robert Heinlein, an American science fiction author, which basically underlines the importance of Community Engagement Programs that are a part of a student’s learning journey.

The month of May every year is observed as World Digestive Health Day. Understanding the importance of Digestive health in general well-being, the students of the BSN 2021 cohort adopted this health day to create awareness regarding ‘Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)’.

On Tuesday, 10th May 2023, the 2nd year BSN students embarked upon a journey to create awareness regarding IBS in Thumbay University Hospital. The event was supported by the gracious presence of Dr. Fozi Dakhila, Medical Director, Thumbay University Hospital, Dr. Gurujit Singh Monga, Chief Operating Officer, Thumbay University Hospital, Ms. Justina Nancy Mendonca, Group Chief Nursing Officer, Prof. Selva Titus Chacko, Dean College of Nursing and Prof. Moon Moon Haque, Acting Dean Thumbay College of Management and AI in Healthcare.

The students had planned various activities to educate the public in a fun interactive way, which included a station where participants shared what they had for breakfast, posters on facts and figures including latest statistics of IBS in UAE, Role play regarding the signs and symptoms, pin the organ game, Tic-tac-toe to identify gut positive food and gut negative food, live food display both good and not-so-healthy.

The event was well-appreciated and much applauded by all present.
Patients were encouraged to visit the stations, and the importance of each food item which are good and bad for IBS were explained.
