Academic writing is an essential skill for academicians, as it involves the production of scholarly papers, research reports, essays, and other academic documents that are critical to the advancement of knowledge in their field.
With this regard, the College of Nursing organized a Faculty Development Session titled ‘Academic Writing and Reference Management’, on March 16th, 2023, from 3.00-5.00 pm. The session was delivered by Dr. Walid El Sayed, Associate Dean Academics, Associate Professor of Oral Histopathology, College of Dentistry, GMU.

Dr. Walid started the workshop by discussing the importance of academic writing and its impact on research and career progression. He emphasized the need for clear and concise writing that conveys academic assignments and research findings effectively to the readers. He also highlighted the key elements of academic writing, such as the importance of proper grammar, appropriate citation, and referencing, and the use of formal language.
Dr. Walid then introduced the participants to Chat GPT technology, a powerful tool for academic writing. Chat GPT is an Artificial Intelligence-based tool that can assist in various stages of writing, such as generating ideas and improving the language.

Dr. Walid also demonstrated how Chat GPT can help improve the language used in research papers. The tool can suggest alternative phrases, sentences, and vocabulary to improve the clarity and conciseness of the text. Moreover, Chat GPT can assist in checking for grammatical errors, such as punctuation and sentence structure.
The session was extremely beneficial and the faculty participated actively by asking relevant questions and clarifications. Due to time constraints, the session on reference management was not covered. Therefore, an additional session will be scheduled to ensure that all aspects of reference management are covered thoroughly.
