“GMU-CNU Introduction to Teaching & Learning” A Students’ Certificate Program Day 1 What should pharmacy Students learn?

Introduction to competency and outcome-based education

On February 12, 2022, College of Pharmacy Gulf Medical University and California Northstate, College of Pharmacy launched the first session of “GMU-CNU Introduction to Teaching & Learning” A Students’ Certificate Program “. The training program is designed to introduce the essential pedagogical aspects of teaching and learning to pharmacy students participating in peer learning programs and/or academic rotations in both institutions.   41 faculty and students from both institutions participated in panel discussions and presentations under the theme “What should pharmacy Students learn?“

Professor Sherief Khalifa, Dean and Professor, College of Pharmacy, Vice Chancellor for Quality & Global Engagement, Gulf Medical University and Professor Xiaodong Feng, Dean and Professor, College of Pharmacy, Vice President of Student Services, California Northstate University engaged in a panel discussion on “Competencies and Attributes of The Pharmacy Graduate: A Global Prospective“. The panel discussion was moderated by Dr. Linda Buckley, Vice President, Institutional Effectiveness and Accreditation, California Northstate University.

Dr. Peter Tenerelli, Assistant Professor of Clinical & Administrative, College of Pharmacy, California Northstate University presented on the importance of “Professional Identify Formation in Pharmacy education”

Dr. Eman El-labbad, Assistant Professor of medicinal chemistry at Gulf Medical University provided an overview of constructive alignment and instructional design model for lesson planning during the session “how learning can be organized”

Finally, student leaders of peer learning programs from GMU and CNU shared their reflections on different types of peer teaching and learnings programs. Ms. Fathima Sheik Kather, and Ms. Keerthana Selvaraju fourth year PharmD students at Gulf Medical University shared their reflections as tutors in “Together We Rise“ Peer learning program.

Ms. Farah Sedki, 3rd year PharmD and Ms. Tureye Abdulla, 2nd year PharmD at California NorthState University, provided overview on the tutoring and supplemental instruction peer support programs at the college of pharmacy, California Northstate University.

Dean Khalifa commented: I am very excited about this program and I believe that the best investment we can make as faculty is in our students. They have the energy, the talent and the drive to make the impossible possible. I am very proud of our students at CNU and GMU. They will not only own their future; they will own the world and will make it a better place for them and for generations to come. I see this program as the beginning of a long and fruitful partnership between GMU and CNU and I eagerly look forward to the next steps!
