Interprofessional Webinar Series – Diabetes Mellitus

Interprofessional education(IPE) aims to learn about, from and with different health professionals to enable effective and improved health outcomes. IPE is a platform for improving the quality of collaboration, enhancing communication and partnering with clinical teams in providing care to the patient and their families.

IPE is an important pedagogical approach for preparing health professional students to provide patient care in a collaborative team environment. The World Health Organization, National Academics of Practice and the American Public Health Association are a few of the many organizations that have articulated support to IPE.Sharing information on the roles of various team members, determining professional responsibilities and boundaries, learning how different professions work together to optimize their strengths in providing patient care and all of this contribute to the development of professionals working together towards a common goal (e.g. optimizing patient care).

GMU/TUH experts from five health professions shareda platform to address evidence-based collaborative care approach in the management of Diabetes Mellitus. The multidisciplinary team exhibited mutual coordination in the patter of care provided to this group of patients. The team members are listed in the sequence ofthe  presentation in the session.

Managing the Non-communicable, Metabolic disease, Diabetes Mellitus is a challenge. The expertise of multi-professionals is required to provide integrated care. This webinar demonstrated a collaborative approach among Gulf Medical University/Thumbay University Hospital (TUH) professionals from Nursing, Medical, Dental, Pharmacy and Physiotherapy. This IPE webinar helped students to understand their own professional identify at the same time gained an understanding of the roles of other professionals with the health team.
