Dr. Abid Shaheer Karanghadan is an Assistant Professor of Biochemistry in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, College of Medicine, Gulf Medical University (GMU), Ajman, United Arab Emirates. He holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry (Medicine) from Annamalai University, India, along with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Medical Biochemistry from the University of Calicut, India. In addition to teaching across undergraduate programs, Dr. Karanghadan serves as Program Co-Chair of the Bachelor of Biomedical Science program, Laboratory In-Charge of Biochemistry and Research Supervisor for undergraduate students. He has also completed the Certified Online Educator Course from Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University, Dubai and has extensive experience in establishing and implementing laboratory standard operating procedures aligned with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.
His primary research interests include inflammatory adipokines, visceral adiposity, insulin resistance and the therapeutic role of modern antidiabetic drugs in type 2 diabetes mellitus and its complications. He has been awarded two research grants as Principal Investigator, both funded by the GMU.
- Effect of Semaglutide Add-on to Metformin on Visceral Adiposity and Biomarkers of Adipose Tissue Activity in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (2023–2024).
- Inflammatory Adipokines, Visceral Adiposity Index and Insulin Resistance Depending on the Degree of BMI in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (2025–2026).
Dr. Karanghadan has authored 10 peer-reviewed original research publications in international journals indexed in Scopus and PubMed, spanning topics such as adiponectin in insulin resistance, metabolic effects of SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists and diagnostics in cancer pathology. He also serves as a reviewer for several leading journals, including Journal of Diabetes Research, Scientific Reports, Endocrine and multiple BMC journals.
He has been recognized internationally as a Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Science (FIBMS, UK) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine (FRSM, UK).
