
The College of Pharmacy, Gulf Medical University conducted an Exit Exam for the Class of 2017. The exam was comprised of three components, multiple choice questions, a writing section and an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) component made up of five stations testing communication and professional clinical skills and attitudes. All assessment elements were mapped to the Doctor of Pharmacy program educational outcomes at the “Mastery” level. Students participated in the day-long exit exam and showcased their achievement of the program educational outcomes. The exam was conducted using up-to-date educational technology. The multiple choice questions used a software to perform item analysis, written, and the OSCE used clinical consultation rooms and the institutional pharmacy located in the Center for Advanced Simulation in Healthcare.
Patient actors were invited to assess the skills of students in patient history taking, assessment of adverse drug reactions and drug interactions, preparation of patient specific care plans and delivering detailed patient counseling. An OSCE station with a physician and a nurse was designed to assess inter-professional communication skills of students.
Dean of the College, Dr. Sherief Khalifa appreciated the participation of the entire membership of the college of pharmacy and the valuable contributions from Gulf Medical University Colleges. He also discussed with faculty members how the results of the exit exam will be used towards improving the quality of the Doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) program.
