GMU Pharmacy Students’ Association (GPSA) Promotes Cultural Exchange and Student Collaboration

On Saturday, November 23rd, pharmacy student organizations from ACOF (Colombia), GPSA (UAE), and APhA-ASP (USA) came together for a dynamic and engaging international forum. The event, which focused on both cultural exchange and pharmacy education, was not only informative but also fun, as students shared insights into their countries’ unique approaches to pharmacy practice and education.

The forum, that included GMU PharmD students, also highlighted the role of pharmacists within each country’s healthcare system, with a focus on pharmacy education paths in each respected country. One of the key topics was the potential for student exchange programs, which would allow students to gain a broader global perspective and enhance their clinical skills through international exposure.

A key part of the event was the discussion of cultural significance in pharmacy practice. Students explored how the cultural context of each country shapes the role of pharmacists. In Colombia, for example, community pharmacists are central to healthcare, often providing first-line care and advice. In the UAE, pharmacists play an increasingly clinical role in multidisciplinary healthcare teams, while in the USA, pharmacists are integral to patient care management and medication therapy management.

Beyond the academic discussions, the forum also emphasized the fun and rewarding aspect of cultural exchange. Participants enjoyed learning about each other’s traditions, healthcare practices, and daily student life. The idea of student exchange programs was met with enthusiasm, with many seeing it as an exciting opportunity to broaden their perspectives and experience pharmacy education in another cultural setting. The event was a great success, leaving everyone excited about the future of global pharmacy education and the potential for fostering lasting international friendships.
