PharmD students visited Thumbay labs on Tuesday, November 19th and received hands-on training on High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The training was provided by Dr. Eman Ellabad, assistant professor of Medicinal & Analytical Chemistry, as part of the Pharmaceutical Analysis lab course taught to semester 3 PharmD students. HPLC is a chromatographic tool with vast pharmaceutical applications in the field of drug analysis, drug development, drug discovery, clinical diagnosis, and therapeutic drug monitoring. We believe that this training will be a good step in preparing our students for the job market in different fields of pharmaceutical industry, regulatory affairs, and therapeutic drug monitoring.

The students were introduced to HPLC components, operation, and parameters affecting compounds separation especially resolution factor. They also applied what they learned in a practical case focused on the application of HPLC on the determination of the concentration of an unknown substance via calibration curve method. The lab experience was followed by an online session on the GMU e-learning portal to reinforce the learning outcomes of the training session.
