GMU College of Pharmacy Starts Intensive Training for APPE Interns on Prescribing Skills

GMU College of Pharmacy is the first college worldwide (outside UK) to incorporate the British Pharmacological Society’s Prescribing Skills Assessment (PSA) into its pharmacy curriculum to assess the prescribing skills of students at the point of exit from degree. GMU College of Pharmacy is also using the PSA to identify areas of improvement in the curriculum as a means of continuous quality enhancement.

On February 13, 2023, clinical pharmacists and preceptors practicing in Thumbay University Hospital started to conduct an intensive daily online training for the APPE interns. During this training students are familiarized with answering different clinical cases while having free access to the British National Formulary (BNF) as the main resource. They also receive training on the efficient use of time to be able to answer questions in the limited time allowed during PSA. These training sessions go in parallel with the ongoing APPE clinical rotations, and hence integrating real practice experience with PSA-model cases for best learning experiences.
