Many drugs or their metabolites are eliminated through the kidneys. A decrease in kidney function results in the accumulation of toxins. Many drugs or pathological conditions could cause kidney injury. It is of paramount importance for pharmacists and other healthcare professionals to decrease preventable kidney injuries and manage medicines in patients with impaired kidney function for improving clinical outcomes. Pharmacists and other health professionals need to be empowered with better clinical decision-making regarding kidney care.
Dean Sherief Khalifa of the College of Pharmacy indicated that the event emphasizes the importance of a collaborative care model for integrated kidney care. Such academic and healthcare institution partnerships will improve education, practice, and elevate the pharmacy profession.
