On October 2nd, 2023, the College of Pharmacy hosted a faculty research seminar, featuring Professor Saravana Babu Chidambaram, titled “Vascular Dementia and Gut Dysbiosis,” attracted audience from faculty members and candidates of the Masters in Drug Discovery and Development program.
Dr. Babu, obtained Masters and PhD degree from The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai, and is currently serving as a Professor of Pharmacology at Jagadguru Sri Shivarathreeshwara College of Pharmacy. Dr. Babu is the Director of the Centre for Experimental Pharmacology & Toxicology, JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research University (JSSAHER), Mysore.

During the seminar, Dr. Babu delved into a critical topic “The Influence of Gut Dysbiosis in the Pathogenesis and Management of Ischemic Stroke”. He shed light on how alterations in the diversity, abundance, and functions of the gut microbiome, known as gut dysbiosis, play a pivotal role in dysregulated gut–brain signaling. This, in turn, leads to consequential changes in the intestinal barrier, endotoxemia, systemic inflammation, and infection, ultimately impacting post-stroke outcomes. Dr. Babu emphasized the bidirectional nature of gut-brain interactions, with signals from the gut mediated by microbially derived metabolites.

The session was followed by an engaging discussion on potential strategies for targeting gut dysbiosis to advance treatment options for stroke, underscoring its clinical significance.
