
World Hypertension Day 2018 is celebrated on May 17, 2018. The theme for World Hypertension Day this year is to Know Your Numbers with a goal of increasing awareness about high blood pressure (BP) in all populations around the world. The Mini Project on World Hypertension Day was conducted on Monday, May 14, 2018 at GMU.
The activities included brick-building quiz on hypertension, display of informative posters, blood pressure measurement, information of salt content in different food items, healthy eating and clinical symptom identification using anatomical charts. The students, faculty and GMU staff enthusiastically participated in these activities. A presentation on types of hypertension, its causes, UAE and global prevalence, etiology and risk factors, prevention, treatment, myths was delivered. Student volunteers demonstrated the importance of life style changes and physical activities by showing a correlation between exercise and blood pressure.


Testimony of Dr Razia Khanam:
Under my supervision, the students conducted a successful Mini Project on Hypertension. They actively participated to increase the awareness among the peers and GMU staff about important issues related to hypertension and its prevalence, prevention and management. The students of College of Medicine and other colleges participated in the activities conducted by MBBS year I students. The activities provided a platform for inter-professional and personal development, thereby inducing an enthusiasm and self-motivation amongst the students.

While preparing for and participating in Mini Project on Hypertension, I came to know new concepts and information about it. I am happy that I got this opportunity to participate on a disease that is not only world’s most prevalent cardiovascular disease, but also is related to our life style. Participation has given me confidence in preparing and managing presentation and activities respectively. It also had helped me in learning and sharing about types, etiology and management of hypertension.

Participation helped me in collecting data from various resources, interacting with peer and also improved my communication skills. It was informative and instructive to boost up my knowledge on the management and prevention of hypertension and some myths that are commonly seen in our society.
Under the guidance of Dr. Razia Khanam, it was easy to understand the objectives clearly and it was overall a very good experience.
