
International Day for the Elderly is dedicated to honor, respect and care for the world’s elderly. The International Day of Elderly is observed on 1 October every year. It is celebrated by raising awareness about issues as senescence, ageing population, provision of adequate healthcare for the aged, social service, etc. It is also a day to appreciate the contributions of the older people to the Society. Every year the UN Social Development selects a specific theme. The Theme for 2017 was “Stepping into the Future: Tapping the Talents, Contributions and Participation of Older Persons in Society”. The 2017 theme will explore effective means of promoting and strengthening the participation of older persons in various aspects of social, cultural, economic, civic and political life.
At Gulf Medical University, Ajman, International Day of the Elderly was celebrated as Mini project by College of Medicine on 2 October 2017. Phase 1 Students participated in the Mini Project. The Objectives focused were Importance of Elderly day, Role of elderly in society, Contributions of elderly people, Issues in elderly like physical, psychological and social effects of aging, abuse, discrimination etc. Students participated in activities and awareness was spread regarding aging and health, prevention of elderly abuse, Elderly people’s rights and UAE schemes for senior citizens. They took an oath to stand against Elderly abuse and strongly believe the contributions by elderly people to society is invaluable.
