Gulf Medical University Secured 3rd Place Nationally
Aoun Humanitarian Initiative – GMU Red Crescent Team (Nur Al’Amal-Light of Hope)

Empowering Lives Through Compassion and Service

We proudly announce that GMU’s Red Crescent team secured 3rd place nationally among all institutions that participated in the Aoun Community Service Competition. This achievement is a reflection not only of the team’s dedication, but also of the invaluable support and involvement of faculty from across GMU—including the Thumbay Institute of Population Health, Thumbay University Hospital, and various colleges. It also highlights the commitment of our student leaders in nurturing a generation of compassionate, community-oriented healthcare professionals. The program was supervised by Prof. Jayadevan Sreedharan, Dr. Jayakumary Muttappallymyalil and Dr. Anusha Sreejith.

The Aoun Award for Community Service, organized by the Emirates Red Crescent, is a national-level humanitarian competition that invites university students and institutions across the UAE to create sustainable, student-led service projects. The Thumbay Institute of Population Health initiative focuses on promoting a culture of volunteerism, social responsibility, and impactful community outreach.

Under this prestigious platform, Gulf Medical University’s Red Crescent team – Nur Al’Amal took on the mission of uplifting the health and well-being of labor workers in UAE, who were identified as our primary target population. Our theme, “Light of Hope,” translated into a wide array of impactful activities specifically tailored to address both physical, social and mental health needs within this underserved community. Through direct engagement, culturally sensitive communication, and inclusive programming, we aimed to make a meaningful and sustainable difference in their lives.

Over the course of several months, we organized 12 unique events, including health screening camps, mental health workshops, first aid training sessions, a sports day, educational awareness drives, a large-scale iftar, and even creative art therapy sessions. Each event was designed with inclusivity in mind, using multiple languages, accessible materials, and personal engagement to ensure that every participant felt seen, heard, and supported. Our efforts were made possible through collaboration with Emirates Red Crescent, faculty mentors, student volunteers, and community sponsors.

This journey has been deeply transformative. Beyond the outreach itself, we as students grew in empathy, leadership, and teamwork. The trust and smiles of the workers reminded us of the profound impact simple acts of service can have.
