The primary objective of the First Aid Awareness Program held at Genfocus Automation LLC, Ajman on February 3, 2024 was to raise awareness and impart essential first aid skills to the employees enabling them to respond effectively to medical emergencies such as burns, cuts, or collapses within the workplace. The event witnessed active participation from the employees of Genfocus Automation Company, along with the first aid team from Gulf Medical University and the students as observers. The session was led by Dr. Fawzi Amin, Head, Center for Humanitarian Education, GMU, Dr. Sija Binoy, Nurse and Assistant Professor at College of Nursing, Ms. Sandhya Arun, Life Support Instructor at the Advanced Simulation in Healthcare (CASH) along with a team from Emirati Red Crescent Ajman.
The activities included ‘Management of Cuts’ with practical sessions on controlling bleeding, cleaning wounds, and applying bandages to prevent infection; ‘Response to Collapse’ with instructions on assessing the situation, ABCs assessment, recovery position, calling for professional medical assistance and ‘Check, Call and Care’ plan; and lastly ‘Treatment of Burns’, demonstrating how to provide immediate care for burns, including assessing the severity, cooling the affected area and applying appropriate dressings. They were informed about the “things not to do” aspect of burns to prevent any complications.
Participants were allowed to practice the techniques under the guidance of trained professionals. This hands-on approach allowed individuals to gain confidence in their ability to respond effectively during emergencies.
The First Aid Awareness Program proved to be highly beneficial, as employees gained a deeper understanding of common medical emergencies and the importance of timely intervention. They acquired practical skills in first aid, empowering them to provide immediate assistance in emergencies, both within and outside the workplace. A total of 25 members participated.
