Joint Symposium between GMU College of Pharmacy and Washington State University on Advances in Pharmacy Practice: USA & UAE Perspectives

On September 22, 2019, the College of Pharmacy organized a Symposium on “Advances in Pharmacy Practice” at Thumbay Medicity Ajman. The speakers were from Gulf Medical University’s College of Pharmacy and from Washington State University, USA. Students, Faculty, Preceptors, and representatives from the Ministry of Health and Prevention participated in the Symposium.

Dr. Dixon reflected upon local pharmacy practice and on enhancers and obstacles to advancing the pharmacy profession in the region. Prof. Danial Baker detailed on innovative practice models in the USA and future directions in general with examples. Dr. Julie Akers and Dr. Kimberly McKeirnan explained specifically on pharmacist prescribing in minor illnesses and vaccinations administered by pharmacists. Dr. Kiran Kumar provided focused training on indications and contraindications while administering influenza vaccines.

Professor Sherief Khalifa, Dean of the College of Pharmacy emphasized that the pharmacists should lead the change to better serve their patients and to keep and advance their profession. that it is the responsibility of the pharmacist tol lead the change in advancing the pharmacy profession.
