
Abir Al-Azi, a PharmD final year student of College of Pharmacy, Gulf Medical University (GMU) successfully completed her advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi (CCAD). Abir is among 5 GMU students who are undergoing one of her rotations at CCAD. Other practice site hospitals for GMU students in 2018 include Thumbay Hospitals, Sheikh Khalifa Medical City Ajman and Tawam Hospital, Al Ain.
Abir reported having learned from pharmacists, physicians, nurses treating infectious disease. Her experience includes various infectious diseases ranging from simple pneumonia to gangrene, brucellosis, endocarditis, meningitis, tuberculosis, multi-drug resistant infections and serious infections in the immunocompromised patients. She could participate in antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) rounds too. Reading through the latest guidelines and presenting case studies with the standard of care recommendations update clinical knowledge, as per Abir.
Dean Sherief Khalifa commented that GMU PharmD students like Abir are the change agents for the pharmacy profession. This is why it is important for them to receive training in world-class healthcare facilities. This will enable them to duplicate what they have seen and learned in any practice setting they will join.
