Interprofessional Collaboration for Community Impact World Diabetes Day

The College of Medicine organized World Diabetes Day this year as an interprofessional activity with contributions from the Colleges of Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Physiotherapy.

Students contributed to the event with various activities including posters prepared by HDPCS students who prepared a poster about “Diagnosis & management of Gestational DM & diabetes in children”. They highlighted the ongoing research in Gene therapy that gives hope of a permanent cure for diabetic patients. MD students also prepared a poster about the types & biochemical basis of DM.

One MD student also addressed the audience. She talked about her experience as a diabetic patient and how good management and a healthy lifestyle can make diabetes a manageable disorder.  Dental students prepared a poster about  “ Oral complications of DM”.

They also prepared an interactive station, explaining to the audience the correct techniques of dental care (teeth brushing, dental flossing…etc.). Pharmacy students prepared two posters about “New modalities in treatment of Type I & Type II DM” discussing the new advances in drug therapy& insulin injections.  BBMS students participated with a poster about “Laboratory diagnosis of DM”. They also organized a glucometer station, to measure blood glucose levels for the participants. Nursing students participated in an activity to measure BMI for the participants. They also prepared a poster about “Obesity & BMI”. Physiotherapy students participated in an interactive station to examine the audience for the balance test; a test for patients with neuropathy.

All the posters were revised by the organizing committee members.

In addition, students from all the participating colleges created a video role-play for a diabetic patient seeking healthcare services from different healthcare providers (Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy & Dentistry). The video was displayed during the event.

BBMS students underwent an interview with Prof Mahir Jalo about the new guidelines in Diabetes management that was also displayed during the event.

Prof Mahir also invited a company that offered a free fundus examination for the audience using an instrument that utilizes AI in the diagnosis of retinopathy.

The event was organized by a dedicated team of faculty from various colleges, led by Dr. Dalia Ali from the Department of Biomedical Science, College of Medicine, with co-leads Prof. May Khalil, Dr. Nevein Hendawy, and Dr. Abid Shaheer. Contributing from the College of Dentistry were Prof. Sura Ali, Dr. Pooja Adtani, Dr. Jovita Dsouza, and Dr. Heba Mohamed. The College of Pharmacy was represented by Dr. Ahmed El Ouweini, while Dr. Sija Binoy played a key role from the College of Nursing, fostering interprofessional collaboration throughout the event.
