On March 28, Dr. Ahmad El Ouweini, Clinical Lecturer at GMU College of Pharmacy and Critical Care Clinical Pharmacist and Preceptor at Thumbay University Hospital, was invited to speak at the 82nd IVPN-AR under the theme: “Medications in Ramadan: Care Redefined.” During this presentation, clinical pharmacists from Saudi Arabia and UAE discussed the impact of fasting on the clinical course of metabolic conditions (i.e., diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and dyslipidemia), recommendations for medications administration timings for patients who fast during the Holy month of Ramadan and patient counselling tips for medication adherence optimization. Dr. El Ouweini, specifically, discussed the challenges that healthcare professionals face when prescribing antimicrobials during Ramadan and explored strategies for addressing the challenges of using antimicrobials during Ramadan, including dosage adjustment, timing of medication administration, and patient counselling.
