Role of Diet in the Obesity Prevention: What school students should know?

Obesity is a major public health issue in the UAE and more prevalent among school-age children. Obesity can have an impact on the physical, mental and social well-being of children. Prevention of obesity comprises multi-pronged approaches, starting from a nutrition education program, enhancing physical exercises and maintaining positive behaviour changes throughout life.

College of Medicine organized a health promotion activity in collaboration with Thumbay University Hospital, Ajman, UAE, for the school-going students of Grades 4-9 on “Role of Diet in the Prevention of Obesity” on October 7, 2022 at East Point Indian International School, Ajman, UAE. Around 300 students participated. The session was led by Ms. Safa Mushtaq, Clinical Dietitian at Thumbay University Hospital, Ajman.

Promotion of healthy and nutritious diet in accordance with WHO recommendation is one of the national agendas to curb obesity among school-going age group. Based on this, the session emphasized the different food groups, ‘my plate’ concept, and role of drinking water in maintaining health.

Students from the third year of the MBBS program participated in this event. Mr. Md Abdus Sakur, Ms. Azza Mhd. Ashraf, and Ms. Soumyaa Vohra said, “Children enthusiastically asked questions and clarified their doubts. We gave them take home healthy eating behaviour tips. We too had a lot of fun interacting with the school students”.
