The Scholarly Pathway at Gulf Medical University

On May, 20th, a group of GMU Year-3 PharmD students (Fatima Kather, Judit Don, and Ishaaq Aba Bagnan) presented their research proposal titled “Potential Anti-cancer profiling of naturally occurring Ginsenosides” as part of the scholarly pathway course series in the undergraduate curriculum.

The scholarly pathway is a unique feature of the GMU PharmD curriculum that allows the undergraduate students to engage in the entire research process from identifying the research question to IRB approval, lab work, manuscript preparation and response to reviewers.

In this unique research experience, the PharmD students work side by side with graduate students in the Master of Science in Drug Discovery & Development (MDD) creating a research group where undergraduate and postgraduate students learn from each other while being mentored by their faculty research supervisor. That photo above was taken at DUPHAT 2021 where they all presented their research work.

The photo shows the research group of Prof. Ahmed Al-Abd, three of his Master’s students: Dalia, Reham and Samiulla and three of his PharmD students: Fatima, Judit and Ishaaq.

Pairing the PharmD students with the MDD students has proven to be a great experience where the shadowing experience has led to enhanced learning and advancing of research skills.
