On April 12, GMU Master in Sciences of Drug Discovery and Development, Reham Abu Hijjleh, participated in the 4th AUE Student Research Competition with a project titled “Evaluation of Anticancer Properties of the Marine Secondary Metabolite Terrein Under Various Microenvironmental Conditions.”

Ms. Reham explained the rationale behind the project and its impact as literature is very limited in that area, but still has shown that terrein exhibits anti-inflammatory activity which is mediated by its inactivation of the nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB) pathway, which has been implicated in various types of cancer. This was the driving force to explore and determine the exact role of terrein as an antitumor agent. The preliminary results of the ongoing project were presented.
Ms. Reham said “I was honored to be shortlisted and selected as one of the participants in the 4th AUE Student Research Competition among a long list of research projects. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Ahmed Al-Abd for his continuing support and motivation, as well as Dalia Al Saeedy for putting in as much effort as I did towards this project.”
Vice Chancellor for Quality & Global Engagement, Dean College of Pharmacy, Professor Sherief Khalifa commented: When you admit the best and the brightest students and when you have the guidance of adept research scientists coupled with state of the art research facilities your program produces research that adds new knowledge and graduates who continue to impact future discoveries.
