GMU PharmD students learn about Clinical Parenteral Nutrition from the expert: Dr. Osama Tabbara

On December 9, 2020, Dr. Osama Tabbara, R.Ph., BCNSP, EMBA, President of IVPN-Network completed the delivery of a module on Clinical Parenteral Nutrition to PharmD students at GMU.

We were fortunate to have someone with such extensive firsthand experience in parenteral nutrition share practical experiences related to nutrition support with our Pharm.D candidates. The module was part of the elective course; “Problems in clinical nutrition and intravenous therapy” and was delivered during the period from November 16 to December 9, 2020.

The module covered many topics including: Goals and guidelines in parenteral nutrition, monitoring of patients on parenteral nutrition, prevalence of malnutrition, causes of and risk factors of malnutrition, the need for organized societies for nutrition support, and basic principles in biochemistry that guide constituents of nutrition support. The role of pharmacists to optimize parenteral nutrition therapy was also emphasized.

Dean Sherief Khalifa commented: Learning from experts in the field provides an appropriate mix of knowledge, skills and behavior and is both motivational and inspirational for our PharmD students as we prepare them to lead the change in pharmacy practice wherever they go.
