GMU College of Pharmacy joins Thumbay University Hospital in celebrating World Antimicrobial Awareness Week

On Nov 26, 2020, College of Pharmacy students geared up to spread awareness on antimicrobial resistance alongside the department of infection control and department of clinical pharmacy, Thumbay University Hospital (TUH).

The event targeted healthcare professionals as well as patients and visitors of TUH. Poster presentations were used as a means of updating healthcare professionals on the recent progress and threats of antimicrobial resistance as per the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The titles presented were:

Systematic review: Prescribing pattern of antibiotics in outpatient and emergency department in Gulf region – Rana Kamran Mahmood, Master of Clinical Pharmacy (MCP) Candidate

Factors to consider when selecting ANTIBIOTICS – Klaithem Almheiri, MCP Candidate

Intravenous to oral antibiotic switch – Reem Al-Shamsi, MCP Candidate

Newer antibiotics for resistant gram-negative infections – Aisha Magaji Abubakar, MCP Candidate

Antimicrobial Resistance – A Growing Concern – Prasanna Vippadapu, MCP Candidate

Poster display “Antibiotics: Handle with care” by Hoda Abdolmonem Ahmed Tashe, MCP Candidate; and flyers by PharmD candidates were used to discuss with patients and visitors of TUH, informing them on the basics of antimicrobial resistance, use and misuse of antibiotics, and safe storing methods.

The community engagement event ended with appreciation to all participants, best poster awards and raffle draws for Bahi Palace Hotel with access to hotel facilities and complimentary lunch.
