Dr. Ashley Anderson delivers a “Drugs in Sport” educational session to GMU PharmD students

On November 4, 2020, Ashley Anderson, a clinical pharmacist specializing as a sports pharmacist, delivered a class on addressing drug and supplement inquiries by athletes and avoiding inadvertent doping. College of Pharmacy at GMU introduced Drugs in Sport elective course in its new PharmD curriculum. In addition to GMU faculty, experts from UAE National Anti-Doping Committee, Prof. David Mottram, and Ashley Anderson are teaching in this course.

Ashley Anderson keeping her clinical skills current by staffing ICU, L&D, ED, and Med/Surg, but has also carved out a special place with her passion for sports pharmacy, preventing inadvertent doping, educating other healthcare providers about sports pharmacists’ value, and acting as a preceptor for pharmacy students. Ashley began working in 2007 for the Drug Reference department at USADA, assisting in resource development, including www.globalDRO.com drug database management.She completed the IOC Drugs in Sport Certification in February 2019 with the inaugural class of students and is now an IOC Drugs in Sport forum moderator.

Ashley is the founder of the International Sports Pharmacists Network, LLC., which promotes integrity among pharmacists involved in sports, provides consultant services on the clinical application of sports pharmacists’ training, and educates healthcare professionals. www.sportspharmacists.org Ashley practices pharmacy by looking at the whole person’s response to substances and appropriateness of medication use for that individual. Her goal is to help people wean off medications or supplements, and she views many medications as a bridge to return to health. Nutrition, maintenance of one’s microbiome, mindfulness, and exercise are the first-line treatments.
