Dr. Semira Abdi presents in GMU College of Pharmacy Seminar Series

Dr. Semira Abdi, Assistant Professor (part-time) at the Department of Pharmacy, Gulf Medical University presented her research conducted in a Malaysian health center on “predicted rate reasons for dabigatran discontinuation” in the College of Pharmacy seminar series on February 05, 2020.

The presentation detailed on the prevalence of atrial fibrillation and stroke associated with atrial fibrillation and the impact of atrial fibrillation associated stroke on patient outcomes. The importance of stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation and the need for balancing the benefit of anticoagulant related stroke prevention benefits to the risk of anticoagulant associated bleeding were explained. The research found predictors of dabigatran discontinuation and the probable time for high rates of dabigatran discontinuation. Potential recommendations that could improve patient care in anticoagulation clinics were discussed.

Dr. Dixon Thomas, Chair, Department of Pharmacy Practice commented; such research when applied in the UAE settings will improve patient outcomes in anticoagulation. There is a great scope for pharmacists provided anticoagulation clinics in the UAE.
