On November 13, 2019, Dr. Saswat Kabisatpathy presented a seminar titled “Let’s Flip The Pharmacy! Evolution of the Community Pharmacy Practice in the New Models of Health Care”. Dr. Saswat Kabisatpathy is the COO of RxClinic Pharmacy & Strategic Analyst of Avant Institute, North Carolina, USA. The seminar was attended by PharmD students, faculty members of the College of Pharmacy, Gulf Medical University and Managers of Thumbay group of Pharmacies.
During his presentation, Dr. Saswat emphasized on the importance of shifting the role of the pharmacist from dispensing medications only to comprehensive medication therapy management, the impact of value-based care practice and billing through provider collaboration such as Chronic Care Management and Transitions of Care management. Dr Saswat also elaborated on the various roles available for pharmacists to fill the gaps of patient-centered and quadruple aimed care included in both Community Care Clinical Services and Collaborative Care Clinical Services. Dr. Saswat also highlighted the contribution of community pharmacists in minimizing healthcare costs and the impact of collaborating with health insurance companies, regulatory affairs, primary community clinics and other healthcare provider setting to provide a sustainable model of care by community pharmacists.
Dr. Saswat shared his experience at RxClinic Pharmacy around their diverse practice paradigm and the unsustainability of the current pharmacy model, leaving behind a question to the audience on what can be done with the current model in the Middle East Region? Dr. Saswat envisions a potential first step opportunity of collaboration between current pharmacist practitioners and pharmacy institutions in the UAE and the Avant Institute as an avenue to train the next generation pharmacist experts and explore tangible solutions in the challenges of the new value based health care models that are affecting patient care delivery on an international level.
