Dr. Karim M. Fawzy is a professor and the former clinical director of the periodontology clinics at the Faculty of Dentistry, Cairo University, professor, and head of the research division at the clinic for Conservative Dentistry and Periodontology, University of Kiel, Germany, and former head of the periodontology division at New Giza University, Egypt.

He completed his BDS in 2002, and Diploma for the Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgeons, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (MFDS-RCSEd) in 2006. In 2008, he received his MSc in Oral Medicine and Periodontology, from Cairo University, Egypt, and was awarded a Grant from the DAAD to complete his PhD at the Christian Albrechts University of Kiel in 2009, where he established his stem cells laboratory. In 2010, he developed minimally invasive techniques for the isolation of multipotent oral stem/progenitor cells.

Dr. Fawzy obtained his PhD degree in 2012. In 2014, he was awarded the IADR-Craniofacial Biology Award and the Egyptian State Incentive Award in Medical Sciences. In 2016, he was awarded the IADR Young Investigator award of the implantology group and obtained his Habilitation degree and ‘Venia Ligend’, in the field of stem cells and periodontal tissue regeneration from the University of Kiel, Germany. In 2021 and 2023, he received the Straumann/DGParo Innovation Award, the Meridol Award as well as the Group Research Award from the German Academy of Periodontology (DGParo), and in 2022, the Egyptian State Excellence Award in Medical Sciences. He has multiple international publications in the field of regenerative periodontal therapy and in the field of stem cells and periodontal regeneration with a special emphasis on regenerative-inflammatory interaction.
