Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) Program

Physiotherapy/Physical Therapy is a health care profession dedicated for the improvement of overall quality of life, prevention of disability and promotion of positive health. The BPT curriculum at College of Health Sciences, GMU is in line with global standards to keep up the knowledge base of Physical Therapy and top priority is given for one-to-one clinical teaching at our well established clinical education facilities. To enhance the clinical skills along with class room teaching, students will be posted at various centers throughout the duration of study. This program is extended over a period of four years including 6 months of internship. On successful completion of this program, the student will be awarded the degree of Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) and qualify as a Physical Therapist, which would be a stepping stone to a challenging career.

Who is a physical therapist?

  • Physical Therapists (PTs) diagnose and treat the individuals of all ages, who have systemic problems or other health-related conditions that limit their abilities to move and perform functional activities in their daily lives.
  • PTs evaluate the client/patient by using appropriate clinical methods and procedures associated with physical therapy practice
  • PTs develop a treatment plan of care by using a range of physical therapy techniques and procedures to promote the individual’s functional ability and overall quality of life by restoring the functions and prevent disability.
  • PTs perform physical therapy intervention procedures by using appropriate clinical and research decisions/tools for rehabilitating clients/patients.
  • PTs promote health in general as well as competitive level, in areas such as sports, work productivity and geriatrics by effectively interacting and maintaining good interpersonal relationship with other health care providers based on ethical and legal guidelines.

  •  The applicant must have completed a minimum of 12 years of school education.
  • All applicants must complete 17 years of age on or before the 31st December in the year of admission.
  • The applicant must have proficiency in spoken and written English. The applicant must have passed any one of the following English Language Proficiency Tests with a minimum score as applicable, of 1100 EmSAT Achieve (UAE Standardized test in English Language)/ 500 TOEFL (CBT 173 iBT 61)/ IELTS Academic 5.0/ PTE A (36-44)/ Cambridge ESOL (41)/ or equivalent in any other standardized internationally recognized test approved by the Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA), Ministry of Education – Higher Education Affairs, UAE
  • The applicants from UAE education system offering Advanced Track/Stream or Abu Dhabi Education Council criteria must have secured an overall average of 70% or above marks as per UAE Secondary School Education Standards and should have scored an aggregate score of 60% or above in Biology, Chemistry, Physics / Mathematics in the 12th Grade.
  •  Applicants from non-UAE educational systems must have secured a minimum aggregate score equivalent to UAE 70% or above and minimum marks in the Science subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) as listed below:

    · An aggregate score of 55% or above in Biology, Chemistry, Physics / Mathematics in the 12th Grade.

    Indian Central Board/ICSE Student should secure an overall minimum score of 55% (B Grade) and above in the 12th Grade.

    · An aggregate score of 50% or above in Biology, Chemistry, Physics / Mathematics in the 12th Grade.

    Student should secure an overall minimum score of 55% (B Grade) and above in the 12th Grade.

    · An aggregate score of 50%or above in Biology, Chemistry, Physics / Mathematics in the 12th Grade.

    UK IGCSE/GCE Studied in all 3 Science subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Physics in O Level, with a

    Minimum of:

    · Cs in all ‘O’ level subjects and ‘D’ any of the two Science subjects in AS level and ‘E’ in A Level (e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics)

    Student should secure an overall minimum 22 points,

    · Must have at least 2 Science subject (e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics)

    USA American Diploma Student should secure an overall minimum score of 70% (C Grade) and above. Studied higher level of science subjects.


  • Applicants from any other non-UAE educational systems not listed above must have secured a minimum aggregate score equivalent to UAE 70% or above as per International Grade Conversion Table published by WES.
  • All applicants shall be evaluated for cognitive and non-cognitive traits demonstrating their aptitude for the chosen area of study by the Admissions Committee which include a personal interview. Admission is finalized on a competitive basis.

Upon successful completion of the program and fulfilling the local license/regulatory requirements, the student can:

  • Work as
    • Physical therapist in multi and super specialty hospitals, outpatient and home care clinics, rehabilitation centers.
    • Ergonomist in industrial sectors and other occupational environments.
    • Instructor in fitness and sports training facilities.
  • Self -employed/home care physical therapist.
  • Pursue career as a research assistant.
  • Advance in career by pursuing Master of Physical Therapy (MPT)  and PhD in specialties like musculoskeletal, neurology, cardio-pulmonary, women’s health and pediatrics.

Upon graduation the physiotherapist should be able to demonstrate entry-level competencies in the following areas of professional practice; 


  • Obtain information relevant to patient’s health from reliable sources.
  • Review the patient information, factors affecting physical, mental abilities and social functions.
  • Identify suitable method of assessment tools and measures which provides strong evidence for the benefits of patients.
  • Indicate the patient about the benefits, limitations and possible risk of the physiotherapy assessment and treatment interventions before obtaining consent.
  • Develop specific treatment goals which enhance the patient’s general health status, physical, mental and functional abilities.
  • Collaborate with other health care professionals and patient to discuss regarding physiotherapy interventions, diagnosis and prognosis.


  • Evaluate the patient’s functional abilities, impairment and limitations of daily activities within the perspective of patients need.
  • Communicate effectively to the patient and care takers about the benefits, limitations and possible risk of the physiotherapy treatment interventions.
  • Deliver physiotherapy services safely and effectively considering with relevant evidence, ethical principles and informed consent.
  • Evaluate the patient outcomes during and after the intervention with appropriate outcome measures and modify accordingly.
