Bachelor of Science – Anesthesia Technology (BSc. AT)

Bachelor of Science – Anesthesia Technology is a four-year bachelor program that aims at developing health professionals competent to work in surgical care settings with skills specific to anaesthesia and surgical technology.

Anaesthesia and surgical technologists are also referred to as operating room technologists who assist in the preparation of patients, equipment and medications for anaesthesia and operation theatre, instruments, equipment and patients for different surgeries with principles of surgical asepsis and safety. Students enrolled in this major will be able to develop appropriate knowledge and training required to work as a vital member with anesthesiologists, surgeons and surgical team members in the perioperative patient care(preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative phases)

Who is an Anesthesia Technologist?

  • Assist surgeons and other medical professionals in hospital operating rooms and similar environments.
  • Handle and maintain anaesthesia and surgical instruments and equipment
  • Prepare, scrub and circulate appropriate surgical and anaesthetic equipment during surgery.
  • Immediate assistant to anaesthetist and surgeon in performing procedures and surgery.
  • Assists the surgical team in the event of any complications arising in anaesthetic, surgical or emergency conditions.
  • Verify and handles medications, solutions and specimens used in the surgical units.


The AST program will become the premier provider of Anesthesia and Surgical Technology professionals in the Middle East region, recognized for its excellence in academics, clinical practice, research and community services.

  • The applicant must have completed a minimum of 12 years of school education
  • All applicants must complete 17 years of age on or before the 31st December in the year of admission.
  • The applicant must have proficiency in spoken and written English. The applicant must have passed any one of the following English Language Proficiency Tests with a minimum score as applicable, of 1100 EmSAT Achieve (UAE Standardized test in English Language)/ 500 TOEFL (CBT 173 iBT 61)/ IELTS Academic 5.0/ PTE A (36-44)/ Cambridge ESOL (41)/ or equivalent in any other standardized internationally recognized test approved by the Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA), Ministry of Education – Higher Education Affairs, UAE.
  • The applicants from UAE education system offering Advanced stream / General Track or Abu Dhabi Education Council criteria must have secured an overall average of 70% or above marks as per UAE Secondary School Education Standards and should have scored an aggregate score of 60% or above in Biology, Chemistry, Physics / Mathematics in the 12th Grade.
  • Applicants from non-UAE educational systems must have secured a minimum aggregate score equivalent to UAE 70% or above and minimum marks in the Science subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) as listed below:

    Student should secure an overall minimum score of 70% (C Grade) and above in the 12th Grade.

    · An aggregate score of 60% or above in Biology, Chemistry, Physics / Mathematics in the 12th Grade.

    · An aggregate score of 55% or above in Biology, Chemistry, Physics / Mathematics in the 12th Grade.

    Indian Central Board/ICSE Student should secure an overall minimum score of 55% (B Grade) and above in the 12th Grade.

    · An aggregate score of 50% or above in Biology, Chemistry, Physics / Mathematics in the 12th Grade.

    Student should secure an overall minimum score of 55% (B Grade) and above in the 12th Grade.

    · An aggregate score of 50%or above in Biology, Chemistry, Physics / Mathematics in the 12th Grade.

    UK IGCSE/GCE Studied in all 3 Science subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Physics in O Level, with a

    Minimum of:

    · Cs in all ‘O’ level subjects and ‘D’ any of the two Science subjects in AS level and ‘E’ in A Level (e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics)

    Student should secure an overall minimum 22 points,

    · Must have at least 2 Science subject (e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics)

    USA American Diploma Student should secure an overall minimum score of 70% (C Grade) and above. Studied higher level of science subjects.


  • Applicants from any other non-UAE educational systems not listed above must have secured a minimum aggregate score equivalent to UAE 70% or above as per International Grade Conversion Table published by WES.
  • All applicants shall be evaluated for cognitive and non-cognitive traits demonstrating their aptitude for the chosen area of study by the Admissions Committee which include personal interview. Admission is finalized on competitive basis.

Upon successful completion of the program and fulfilling local license/regulatory requirements, the student can:

  • Work as:
    • Anesthesia and surgical technologist in hospitals, surgical centers, ambulatory centers, emergency and trauma units.
    • Sterile processing department manager.
    • Surgery scheduler.
    • Application specialist in surgical instrument manufacturers.
    • Self-employed surgical technologist.
  • Pursue career as a research assistant.
  • Advance in career by pursuing higher education in specialty areas like conscious sedation for dentistry, dialysis, anesthesiology, physician assistant (anesthesia), pain management, invasive anesthetic techniques and medical technology.

Competency Area 3: Anesthesia and surgical practice

  1. Receives, transports and positions the patient safely on operating table
  2. Ensures informed consent and identification of patients
  3. Demonstrates knowledge of anesthesia products and its function and ensures availability of anesthesia  drugs and equipment
  4. Monitors and interprets patients vital signs
  5. Demonstrates skill in assisting for anesthesia techniques and emergency procedures
  6. Maintains surgical asepsis throughout the surgical procedure
  7. Prepares the operation theatre, equipment and instruments as  per standard protocols
  8. Demonstrates skills in prepping and draping the patient for specific surgery
  9. Demonstrates dexterity and skills in the role as a scrub technologists
  10. Maintains focus on surgical procedure and operation site requirements
  11. Prepares surgical drains, and dressings as required
  12. Demonstrates the role of a circulatory technologist
  13. Ensures labelling and handling of surgical specimens
  14. Report and deviations from the normal physiological functions
