Department of Physiotherapy, College of Health Sciences, GMU conducted a one-day course on Geriatric Physiotherapy to home care therapists who are providing home and community care to elderly patients in the Northern Emirates of Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah, UAE working under Emirates Health Services on 2nd November 2022.
The course was structured, and tailor made by faculties of Physiotherapy at GMU lead by Dr. Kumaraguruparan Gopal, and contributed by Dr. Srilatha Girish and Dr. Sathees Kumar D, who are subject experts and experienced academic faculties in the field of geriatric physiotherapy rehabilitation and advanced physiotherapy management for cardiorespiratory disorders.

The Course consisted of:
- Theories of ageing & Age-related physiological changes in musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiopulmonary systems
- Functional assessment in geriatric population & Principles of strength training for old age
- Bedridden complications and management for elderly
- Risk of fall & Fall prevention strategies
- Common Cardiopulmonary disorder and coping strategies in old age
- Positioning for dependent patients to optimize the oxygen transport pathway.
- Exercised to improve the ventilatory patterns and breathing strategies among elderly.

Dr. Ramprasad M, Chair, Physiotherapy Department discussed with the participants about the importance of the knowledge sharing among the physiotherapist community for the betterment of delivering rehabilitation services. Also, he interacted with them about the challenges in home and community rehabilitation services.

Dr. Fatima Al Meleh, Project Manager of Elderly Care at the Primary Health Care Department EHS has thanked the PT faculty for their efforts in designing and delivering this structured and interactive program to enhance their physiotherapeutic competencies in the care of geriatric patients.
