Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice Stage 2 Successful Completion of IPE Phase II at Gulf Medical University

The Center for Advanced Simulation in Healthcare (CASH) successfully completed Phase II of the Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice (IPEC) on February 14, 2025, in collaboration with the phase 2 University IPE Coordinators Dr. Bhavna Jha, Sandhya Arun, and Murtada M. Fathelrahman.
A total of 45 students from eight colleges participated in the IRAT, TRAT, and simulation-based learning sessions. Students represented the College of Medicine, College of Dentistry, College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, College of health sciences (Anaesthesia Technology, Physiotherapy, Medical Laboratory Science, and Medical Imaging Sciences).
Additionally, 16 facilitators from nine colleges guided the students through the sessions. facilitators were from the College of Medicine, College of Dentistry, College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, College of health sciences (Anaesthesia Technology, Physiotherapy, Medical Laboratory Science, and Medical Imaging Sciences programs) and Thumbay College of Management and AI in Healthcare. This phase followed a blended interprofessional education model with team-based learning (IPEC-TBL), focusing on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) as the clinical case.
The IRAT & TRAT, held on November 15, 2025, engaged students in MCQs under facilitator guidance.
The final simulation session, on February 14, 2025, commenced with a welcome address by the IPE Coordinators, followed by an opening address by Chairperson of the IPE Committee, Prof. Selva Titus Chacko, who honored the event, emphasizing the significance of interprofessional collaboration, patient safety, and patient-centered care.
The event was supported by Gulf Medical University’s leadership team, including former Chancellor Prof. Hossam Hamdy, current Chancellor Prof. Manda Venkatramana, Chairperson of the IPE Committee Prof. Selva Titus Chacko, and the Deans of the Colleges, who continue to drive excellence in interprofessional education and healthcare training.
To energize participants, an icebreaker quiz competition was held between students and facilitators, with facilitators emerging victorious.
Students were then divided into four groups (A, B, C, D) and participated in COPD simulation exercises conducted in an ICU setup, using advanced simulation technologies including the Gaumard HAL Manikin, DARTSIM, and the VENUS NURSING SIMULATOR (Tellyes, Cat. No. TUE9001).
Facilitators assessed student performance, followed by a structured debriefing session.
After evaluation, Group D was announced as the winner, receiving certificates from Prof. Selva Titus Chacko and the IPE Coordinators.
A peer-to-peer evaluation survey was conducted, and certificates of participation were awarded to all students who completed the three stages (IRAT, TRAT, and Simulation).
