On 25 September 2018, the Final year PharmD student Fatima Ambaya participated in an Interprofessional Educational (IPE) case discussion along with Medical, Nursing and Medical Laboratory Sciences students, held at Thumbay Hospital, Ajman. The audience was health professionals and health science students across various disciplines.
During her presentation, Ms. Fatima discussed on the various factors affecting the choice of antimicrobials in an enteric fever patient and listed the approaches towards the selection of empirical therapy. She also critically appraised the treatment provided for the patient in relation to the existing evidence. She then highlighted the definitive therapy for enteric fever based on culture sensitivity testing and then discussed on the prevalence of drug-resistant enteric fever and extensively drug-resistant typhoid for which the strain remains susceptible to azithromycin and carbapenems.
In the end, she concluded the presentation highlighting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations for travelers (even short-term travelers) to endemic areas to get vaccinated against typhoid fever.
Other participating students from Medicine, Nursing and Medical Lab Sciences analyzed the case from their professional perspective and expertise. As usual in GMU IPE sessions, the students worked together and appreciated each other’s importance and responsibilities in better serving their patients.
