Thumbay Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare Faculty Delivers Key Notes at IEEE International Conference

Dr. Vinaytosh Mishra, Director of the Thumbay Institute for AI in Healthcare at Gulf Medical University, gave a keynote speech titled “System Dynamics Simulation for Managing the Carbon Footprint of Large Language Models” on December 9, 2023. This speech was part of the International Conference on Modelling Simulation & Intelligent Computing (MoSICom 2023) hosted by BITs Pilani Dubai.

The rising carbon footprint of large language models is becoming a significant concern in the realm of artificial intelligence. These models, which require extensive computational resources for training and operation, contribute to high energy consumption, often powered by non-renewable energy sources. The data centers housing these computational resources consume vast amounts of electricity, leading to substantial carbon emissions. This environmental impact is further compounded by the continuous growth and complexity of these models, as more sophisticated and larger models demand even greater computational power. Consequently, the AI industry is increasingly focusing on developing more energy-efficient computing methods and exploring the use of renewable energy sources to mitigate the environmental impact of these advanced technologies. In his presentation, Dr. Mishra focused on the issue of escalating carbon emissions due to the growing computational demands of Large Language Models. He explored various strategies to mitigate this carbon footprint and proposed a method for analyzing the effectiveness of these strategies.
