On Monday, 9th July 2025, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, a Graduate Medical Education (GME) session titled “Early Identification and Intervention for Burnout, Depression, and Substance Use in GME Trainees” was successfully conducted at Lecture Hall 2, Gulf Medical University.
Organized by the Thumbay Institute of Mental Health, Gulf Medical University, the session was facilitated by Dr. Soma Ibrahim, Assistant Professor of Mental Health Nursing. The program was designed specifically for medical and dental interns, aiming to build their awareness and skills in recognizing early signs of psychological distress among GME trainees.
The session was delivered in two focused segments:
- Session 1: Recognizing Burnout and Depression in GME Trainees
- Session 2: Recognizing and Responding to Substance Use Disorders

Dr. Soma Ibrahim addressed the critical importance of early identification, peer support, and evidence-based interventions in mitigating mental health challenges faced by trainees through interactive discussions and case-based scenarios.

The session was well-received, with active engagement from the interns, highlighting the growing need for mental health literacy and early intervention strategies in postgraduate medical education.
