At the Thumbay Institute of Clinical Simulation, our Master’s in Physiotherapy students stepped into a simulated ICU to manage a critically ill ventilated patient with retained secretions and respiratory compromise.
This case was designed by simulation educator Sandhya Arun, in coordination with the subject matter expert Dr. Renuka Devi Mahadevan, and the scenario was expertly executed by Mr. Sheikh Hasnain Arshad (Simulation Technologist), ensuring a realistic and immersive learning environment.
During the session, students practiced:
- Endotracheal suctioning
- Manual hyperinflation (MHI)
- Postural drainage techniques
- Real-time patient monitoring and clinical decision-making
What stood out was not just the technical execution, but the professionalism demonstrated through:
- Clear communication under pressure
- Effective teamwork with defined roles
- Strong focus on patient safety throughout
Simulation is not only about acquiring skills—it is about developing clinical judgment, teamwork, and confidence in a safe, controlled environment before real patient encounters.
